I think that the Acornet release might be better off being split into
five parts now.
The primary objective of splitting the archive into 4 (in earlier
versions) was to attempt to make sure that each part would fit on a
720K DOS disc. This made it a lot easier for people to transfer it
from non-RISC OS computers to their own machine (bearing in mind that
many RISC OS 3.1 users will be using equipment that cannot handle
1.44M/1.6M discs). Those with systems which could handle high density
could get two parts on one disc, so they didn't lose out either.
Looking at the total size of the four parts, it is clear that this does
not divide into 4 parts each less than 720K.
"index" file on the FTP server to have bits some sentences missing :-)
I'm sure somebody could think up a better description for acornet_1.spk
that "contains all those not in 2,3 and 4".
I think that if at all possible, including the PPP driver would be very
useful. Many people seem to want to be able to use PPP instead of SLIP
nowadays.
ReadMe020: version number of FreeTime is wrong.
I notice that ArcWeb has lost its ReadMeDocs directory and ReadMe1st.
These are critical since they not only claim the copyrights of the
authors of the contained software which are required by the authors (in
particular the large organisations: MIT, Acorn, UCB and IJG) but they
explain many of the common problems and if something is found to be
wrong, the user is often referred to the files for details. I'm not
quite sure where they should go though. Perhaps if ArcWeb is to remain
in a separate archive, then they should just be plonked in there
alongside !Acornet. Perhaps put them all inside a directory called
ArcWebDocs. The InetDB directory is irrelevant in the context on
Acornet though. You probably wouldn't need ChangeLog either. Stuff
like the ChangeFSI fixes is more tricky. Can Acornet automatically
alter ChangeFSI? Should it? (I've just devised a new fix for CFSI
1.15 to let it recognise revision 2 JFIFs and force djpeg to process
them) ArcWeb requires djpeg 6a to have been installed inside ChangeFSI
too.
That's it for now. I don't dare risk running it though because I don't
want anything altered on my machine :-)
